Hi, I’m Karin!
My passion for gardening began in a small corner of my suburban backyard, where I sought to cut my family’s food budget as a single mom. Over time, what started as a necessity blossomed into a full-fledged love for growing food and sharing it with others.
When I remarried, my husband, Arcenio, and I took a leap of faith, moving to a 5-acre homestead outside city limits. We expanded that small backyard garden into a half-acre plot, then eventually grew it into a thriving 40-acre market farm. Over the years, our farm has supplied fresh, local produce to our community through farmers’ markets and a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program.
Through almost two decades of research, hands-on experience, and even earning a degree in horticulture, I’ve learned a lot—sometimes through trial and error! Along the way, I discovered the incredible power of food. Growing your own food isn’t just about sustenance; it’s about self-reliance, sustainability, and connecting with the earth.
That’s why I started Just Grow Something. My goal is simple: to empower others to grow their own food, no matter their space, experience, or goals. Through my podcast, garden consulting services, classes, and speaking engagements, I share the knowledge I’ve gained to help you get started or take your garden to the next level. Whether it’s a pot of herbs on your windowsill or a backyard vegetable garden, I believe everyone has the ability to grow something of their own.
Let’s dig in together and cultivate something amazing. Explore the site to learn more about what I offer:
The Podcast
The Just Grow Something podcast is all about helping you become a better gardener. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or have never grown a thing in your life, this show aims to give you the knowledge you need to get the biggest and best harvest you can. Guidance for specific plants, insects, weeds, soil health, amendments and more are all discussed here. Along the way, we talk about the food and agriculture issues that affect all of us and dig into topics that many gardeners and eaters may not be aware of. I will help you plant, grow, harvest, and store all your family’s favorites from the garden!
Garden Consulting
I open up garden consulting appointments in both the spring and fall each year, both locally and virtually. Count on me to give you the one-on-one attention you need to get your garden questions answered for your specific space. Check this page to find out more and to get on the list. Spaces are limited due to my farming schedule, so be sure to sign up quickly or risk being placed on the waiting list for the next season.
